Dr James Lovelock is a writer and academic with a particular interest in LGBTQ representation in media. James is currently writing a book on LGBTQ characters and queer representation in contemporary musical theatre for Methuen Drama, which draws on interviews with over eighty musical theatre practitioners from a variety of backgrounds about their experiences in the industry. James' research draws from disciplines including queer theory, sociology, cultural theory and media. James' website www.queermusicals.com is an important resource for musical theatre students around the world.

James previously worked as a performer and director in musical theatre and improvised comedy. James was the original pianist for Showstopper! The Improvised Musical between 2007 and 2010, and founded and directed Baron Sternlook's Improvised Musical between 2013 and 2020. More recently, James established the LGBTQ Performing Arts Research Project at the University of Wolverhampton and directed three concert-lectures with the group. James presented three series of webinars and panels for ArtsFest between 2021 and 2022, and a new podcast series Represent! - The Queermusicals.com podcast will be released in July 2022.
